Thanks

SJN could not exist without the prayers, support and efforts of many, many people. Many thanks to all who help make SJN the special place it is and will become. We realize that everyone has been blessed with different gifts. We realize that everyone’s ability to volunteer time or donate is different. SJN is a family made up of young adults, young families, retirees, people at the peak of their careers, empty-nesters, widows and widowers, families with kids in college, etc. From time-to-time your participation may change due to a change in job, retirement, kids going to college, etc. THAT’S OK. It is in thanksgiving that we, your fellow parishioners at SJN, celebrate your gifts to the parish — thanksgiving, not judgment.

Thanks for all you do for SJN.

Enrollment Stats

We have approximately 2,575 families registered at SJN; total parishioners are approximately 6,720.

As of September 2011, 728 children were enrolled in our religious education and youth programs (424 elementary, 126 middle school, 178 high school). Additionally, we have 120 children attending our preschool program.

Giving Statistics

About 43 percent of our fellow parishioners have pledged support for the building of our new church (average pledge was $10,604 over five years or $41 per week for five years).

About 50 percent of our fellow parishioners support SJN’s ongoing operations (staff, utilities, maintenance, etc.) (average weekly giving is $35 per week).

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, 34 percent of our stewardship collections and 20 percent of our capital campaign collections were done electronically, through electronic checks or credit cards. This form of giving is a very safe and effective way to make donations to SJN and saves SJN money in a number of ways. This stable and predictable source of funds also allow us to plan for ministries, operations and our new church much more effectively. Call Tasha Key in the office at (512) 328-3220 ext. 111 to set up an electronic gift.

Note — Managing parish finances, ministry and operational funding can be vastly improved with an increase in the frequency of giving (if possible).

How are Donations Used?

Donations are used for only what the donor intended. Capital donations are only used for the intended building project and related costs, including architectural fees, short-term construction interest and fund raising. Sunday offerings are used for the ongoing operations of SJN, including personnel costs, utilities, property maintenance costs, long-term debt costs and payment of the SJN commitment to the Diocesan Our Faith, Our Legacy campaign. Other donations made are used solely for those things the donor requested. There is a separate accounting for all these monies collected.

Do I Need to Give to Both the Capital Campaign and Weekly Stewardship?

SJN has buildings to build and operating costs to pay. Weekly giving is vital to carrying on the mission of SJN on a day-to-day basis. SJN needs to pay parish staff, utility bills, maintenance bills and other basic costs of supporting all we do as a parish. However, from time-to-time, we havespecial needs, such as we have now for building our new church. Special giving requests to meet these needs are critical to SJN’s mission as well.

One other aspect to consider is that there is absolutely no commingling of capital and stewardship monies. A shortfall of either capital monies or stewardship funds can create an imbalance in making investments necessary to carry out SJN’s mission. For instance, having a brand new church but inadequate funding of maintenance, ministries and other operating costs can result in SJN not using the new church to the extent we’d like.

While it would be good to have full participation of all families in both types of funding, that may not be realistic for a variety of reasons. However, any increase in the number of families supporting both our capital campaign and our ongoing operations would greatly help.

When You Donate Stock

Because of the way the banking system is set up, SJN does not always receive the name of the donor when stock is donated to SJN. As a result, knowing the name of the donor and the donor’s intent can be delayed for months until the transaction is sorted out. Therefore, when making stock donations (transfers) to SJN, please advise SJN ahead of time to ensure proper and timely handling of the transaction. Call Tasha Key at SJN (512-328-3220, ext. 111) when making a transfer.

Our Faith Our Legacy

SJN, as a parish, will be contributing $1,936,000 to the Diocesan Our Faith Our Legacy campaign. Mgsr. Jordan and Bishop Aymond decided to separate the diocesan campaign from SJN’s capital campaign to build the new church. All of the capital pledge donations made to the Cornerstone of Christ campaign will go toward building the church; none of this money will go toward paying SJN’s commitment to the Bishop’s OFOL campaign. The $1,936,000 will be paid to the diocese out of weekly collections. SJN and its parishioners have paid $908,000 of this obligation through Aug. 31, 2011.

Cathedraticum

Ten percent of all stewardship donations collected by SJN are remitted to the diocese in support of the Catholic Church of Central Texas. Certain monies are exempt from the assessment, primarily interest paid on our debt and religious education tuition.

New Church Operating Costs

When our new church is finished, our operating costs will increase by about $175,000 a year for higher utilities, insurance, cleaning, etc. An 8 percent increase in weekly giving is needed just to cover these costs.

Utilities Costs

SJN spends over $125,000 for utilities annually. This includes electricity, gas, water and sewer. Please do what you can to conserve when using our facilities.

Do Volunteers Make a Difference?

Volunteers are the life-blood of SJN. All that SJN is is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of a multitude of dedicated volunteers. From RE teachers to money counters to choir members to tree trimmers… all the hundreds of volunteers who do so much at SJN are critical to SJN’s mission. There are hundreds of volunteer opportunities at SJN; consider joining your fellow parishioners who bring their unique gifts to the table. If teaching or singing is not your particular talent, that’s OK. SJN has needs for volunteers in all areas, including accounting, computer networking, landscaping, minor repair and maintenance, database management, organizational development, etc. SJN also has need for leaders; people who want to help shape the direction of SJN. No matter what your gift, you have a home at SJN. Please visit our Ministries section of the Web site to volunteer your services in any area of interest.

Who Makes Financial Decisions at SJN?

Fr. Bud has ultimate authority and responsibility for all parish financial decisions. However, there are several lay advisory boards that exist to provide Fr. Bud advice and assistance on a wide range of topics. The primary boards are the Finance Council, Building Committee, Construction Committee, Sacred Art Committee and more temporary, short-duration committees formed from time-to-time for specific tasks. In addition, staff members provide advice and have budgetary responsibilities within their respective areas.
